In this case applicants must make a minimum investment of $400,000 (CDN) to a government or province approved venture. They must also be able to demonstrate that they have successfully owned or operated a business, and have amassed a net worth of $800,000 (CDN) or more.

Applicants may also wish to explore the Provincial Nomination program, which allows a province or employer, depending on the province selected, to nominate a limited amount of candidates and apply to the provincial government for sponsorship. A job offer under this route is based upon the candidate's skills.

Unlike working permits, the provincial nomination scheme is a permanent immigration service. In addition, it is important to note that applicants are restricted to working in the province to which the submission was made.

Family Visas
An application for a Canadian family Visa in which existing permanent Canadian residents or citizens can sponsor their foreign national relatives for an agreed time (between 3 and 10 years) in the country until they are able to establish themselves is also available.

In Canada visa requirements for family immigrants are not subject to the points system and any Canadian permanent resident of 18 years or more, with sufficient qualifying income, can sponsor a relative in this way.

Working on a Temporary Basis

A Canadian Work Permit depends upon you working solely for the employer making the offer and will only be issued for a position which could not be filled by a Canadian citizen.

Studying in Canada
In most cases, students wishing to study in Canada will need to obtain a Canadian student visa, although in some circumstances such as those candidates studying for less than six months, a Canadian study visa will not be required.

A study permit for Canada must be applied for as soon as an applicant receives the letter of acceptance from the educational institution. Study permits allow applicants to work part time on campus and seek a renewal from within the country should they decide to continue studying.

Tourism - Applying for a Canadian Visit Visa
Canadian Visit visas or Tourist visas for Canada allow you to visit for up to six months. Working under any of the following Canadian Tourist visa categories is strictly prohibited, and in some cases, depending on your home country, you may need to obtain a Temporary Resident visa as well.

Single Entry Canada Visitor Visa

In addition, students may study in America through an F1 visa for study designed for academic students or an M1 USA study visa for those wishing to undertake a vocational course of study.

In America, visas for non-immigrant applicants are exhaustive in variation, with many individual classes including the K class of family visas, which incorporates the USA fiance visa and USA spouse visa. In addition, the Training and Work Experience Scheme or (TWES) allows candidates to under go training or work experience in Britain but requires that they return to their home country upon expiry of the document. Finally the business visitor visa, which is often referred to as a UK visit visa, travel visa, or tourist visa allows an applicant to attend conferences or visit Britain on business related fact finding missions but does not allow them to undertake employment of any kind.

Business Visas
The group of services usually referred to as UK business visas are intended as routes to permanent residence in the UK; like the points based Highly Skilled Migrant Programme or HSMP, they offer successful candidates permanent residency in the UK and the right to live and work in the UK on a permanent basis.

Beyond the Highly Skilled Migrant Program which assesses candidates on criteria such as age, experience, qualifications and skills, several business immigration categories exist and whilst points thresholds are employed in some cases, they tend be less demanding. In general, business visas place more emphasis upon proven business experience and in many cases, investment.

Entrepreneur Visa
The UK entrepreneur visa is aimed at applicants who wish to migrate to Britain in order to start a new business. Applying for a UK visa in this class requires a candidate to make an investment of at least £200,000. In this category, applicants must perform a key managerial function in the business venture. In addition, they must be able to provide a detailed business plan which demonstrates that the venture will create employment opportunities for at least two EEA nationals.

European Community Association Agreement visa
For citizens of countries with the relevant European Community Association Agreement in place, at present Romania and Bulgaria, a European Community Association Agreement visa, or European Economic Area visa as it is sometimes referred to is an option which allows candidates to migrate to Britain in order to start a business enterprise. Unusually this route does not require candidates to either make an investment or to guarantee the creation of jobs in the United Kingdom. However, candidates immigrating to Britain in this manner must not undertake any employment outside the business venture and must be employed on a full time basis in its maintenance.

UK Innovator Visa
Alternatively, the UK Innovator visa, which employs a points based assessment focuses upon foreign nationals in possession of some capital, who wish to immigrate to the United Kingdom in order to pursue an innovative idea or technology which will be of benefit to the British economy and create job opportunities for the domestic workforce.

This category provides a route for those who may not fulfil the financial requirements of either entrepreneur visas or investor visas and places emphasis upon the innovative nature of the idea, and the business skills to develop and implement it in Great Britain.

Who requires a visa?
Required by all except the following:
(a) holders of a Pakistan Origin Card (POC) regardless of nationality for unlimited stay;
(b) nationals of Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago for an unlimited period;
(c) nationals of Iceland, Maldives and Zambia for visits of up to a maximum of 3 months;
(d) nationals of Nepal and Samoa, and holders of Chinese passports issued in Hong Kong, for visits of up to 30 days;
(e) transit passengers continuing their journey within 24 hours by the same or first connecting aircraft, provided they are holding onward or return documentation and not leaving the airport;
(f) holders of UN Laissez-passer.

Note: Visitors whose stay in Pakistan exceeds 30 days must report to the nearest Foreigners Registration Office for registration.
Note: Travellers are currently advised against travel to Pakistan until further notice unless there are compelling reasons to do so. Travel to the North West Frontier Province, Baluchistan and the Northern Areas are particularly ill advised.

Restricted entry and transit: The Government of Pakistan refuses entry to nationals of Israel, even for transit. Nationals of Afghanistan are refused entry if their passports or tickets show evidence of transit or boarding in India.

What documents will be required?

Time required to issue visa:
Depends on nationality (in UK, visas are normally granted within 24-48 hours). Enquire at the nearest Consulate or Embassy. Pilgrim visas require 2 months processing time.\

What is the cost of a visa?
Price of visa varies according to nationality. For UK nationals, prices are: Single-entry (£45); Double-entry (£60); Multiple-entry (£81). These prices are identical to those issued for the Visa for Media Professionals, which must be routed through the Information Division of the Pakistan High Commission. For Pakistanis holding dual nationality, prices are: Adult: (£24) Child (up to 18 years old): £12; valid for stays of up to 1 year. Applicants with parents holding Pakistani passports get the same concession, provided they produce the original detailed birth certificate and their parents’ Pakistani passports. Pilgrim (Single-entry): £45. This is issued to those wishing to visit holy places (Shrines/Gurdawaras) in Pakistan and is allowed for groups of pilgrims, normally restricted to a specified period. Business: £68 (Single-entry); £90 (Double-entry); £122 (Multiple-entry). Certain nationals are issued visas free of charge, but they must be obtained prior to travel. How long is the visa valid for?
6 months from the date of issue for stays of up to 3 months. A multiple-entry visa allows six journeys in a total period not exceeding 1 year, with a maximum 3-month stay at any one time.

Other information:
1: Yellow fever vaccination certificate is required of all travellers arriving within 6 days from any part of a country in which yellow fever is endemic. Infants under 6 months of age are exempt if the mother’s vaccination certificate shows her to have been vaccinated prior to the child’s birth. Countries and areas within the endemic zone are regarded as infected.

2: Following WHO guidelines issued in 1973, a cholera vaccination certificate is no longer a condition of entry to Pakistan. However, cholera is a serious risk in this country and precautions are essential. Up-to-date advice should be sought before deciding whether these precautions should include vaccination, as medical opinion is divided over its effectiveness. See the Health appendix.

3: Vaccination against typhoid is advised.

4: Malaria risk exists throughout the year in all areas below 2000m (6560ft). The malignant falciparum strain is present and has been reported as chlorine-resistant.

Food & drink: All water should be regarded as being potentially contaminated. Water used for drinking, brushing teeth or making ice should have first been boiled or otherwise sterilised. Milk is non-pasteurised and should be boiled. Powdered or tinned milk is available and is advised, but make sure that it is reconstituted with pure water. Avoid dairy products that are likely to have been made from non-pasteurised milk. Only eat well cooked meat and fish, preferably served hot. Salad and mayonnaise may carry increased risk. Vegetables should be cooked and fruit peeled.

Other risks: Hepatitis A and E occur and hepatitis B is endemic. Trachoma and typhoid fever are common. Between June and January, Japanese encephalitis is a risk in rural areas. Dengue fever may also occur.
Rabies is present. For those at high risk, vaccination before arrival should be considered. If you are bitten, seek medical advice without delay. For more information, consult the Health appendix.

Health care: Medical facilities can be very limited. There is no reciprocal health agreement with the UK. Travellers are strongly advised to take out full medical insurance before departure.

Note: A certificate proving the visitor to be HIV-negative is required if planning on staying over 1 year in the country.

Visa Notes
The Pakistan tourist or business visa is usually valid for two entries within three months from date issued, the business visa may be valid up to one year, for a stay not to exceed 30 days. Former citizens of Pakistan, presenting an old Pakistan passport or National ID card, may apply for a muliple entry visa valid up to 5 years.
Other tourist and business visitors may apply for a multiple entries visa, and, at the discretion of the consulate, it may be approved or a double entries visa may be granted instead. Consular fees, once submitted, are non-refundable.
The Embassy of Pakistan advises that the Visa for employees/associates of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO); humanitarian; missionary organizations, may be delayed several weeks. An invitation from the host organization in Pakistan should also be provided.
Passport must have at least six months remaining validity and contain at least one blank visa page for visa to be issued. TDS can assist with obtaining U.S. Passports, whether new issue, renewal, or obtaining additional visa pages for a valid passport.

REGISTER YOUR TRIP:

The U.S. Department of State encourages all American travelers to register with their local Embassy or Consulate when arriving in a foreign country. Registration helps the Embassy to provide important services for American citizens residing or traveling abroad. Some of these services include:
Locating individuals in cases of family or personal emergencies,
Relaying important travel and safety information about the region,
Arranging evacuation transportation in cases of natural disaster or civil unrest,
Issuing replacement passports when originals are lost, and
A number of other administrative services relating to personal documentation.
Without the information provided through registration, the Embassy is severely hindered in its ability to provide these services. China Visa - Facts and Fiction

An enormous amount of confusion currently exists throughout Beijing's expat community in regard to the Chinese government's apparent, but not officially announced, recent tightening of visa policies. The lack of an adequate response from government departments and spokespeople to the increasing demand for clarification of the gap between the existing regulations and commonly observed practices, has only added to the frustration felt by both business people and those hoping to travel to China during the Olympic period. As applications are being handled on a case-by-case basis, it’s almost impossible to make absolute and irrefutable statements about what’s going on, still, patterns have begun to emerge and below I outline what is known and what can be suspected to be the case in regard to the new visa situation.

What we know for sure:

Since mid-April, additional documents need to be provided to obtain L and F visas:

L (tourist) visa: Outbound and return flight booking and stamped (chopped) hotel reservation for the complete duration of stay. If staying at a relative's house, proof of kinship (marriage / birth certificate) and copies of his/her passport, visa, residence permit and police registration need to be provided.

F (business) visa: Flight booking, stamped (chopped) hotel reservation and original invitation letter from a relevant department of the Chinese government, company or institution, under the authorization of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China.

L and F visas are issued for a standard duration of 30 days, single entry, unless flight bookings (e.g. to Hong Kong) are provided to prove double entry is needed. To obtain a visa for a longer duration, a full travel itinerary needs to be provided. The visa application form has been changed to a much more detailed version.

Extensions of F visa in China are only possible until June 30th, 2008. Interns and short-term project workers are required to apply for a Z visa if an uninterrupted stay in China is required.

The possibility of visa applications in Hong Kong has been severely reduced. Although some 30 days L and F and some Z visas still seem to be issued, the Visa office in Hong Kong requests all foreign passport holders that do not have a Hong Kong residence permit to apply for visas in their respective home country. Expect longer queues and processing times of up to five days. Visa applications in other Asian countries seem to be just as difficult. A list of 33 countries (a list can be found here) whose nationals need to apply for visa in their respective home country has been published; however, restrictions also seem to apply to other nationals.

Z visa extensions, new Z visas and spouse visas have not been affected by the new policies. However, dependent visa that were previously also issued to non-married couples with children now require the provision of a marriage certificate.

Student (X) visas for the summer are only issued by a very limited number of universities and language schools.

The authorities are increasingly tracking down foreigners without valid visas and Registrations of Temporary Residence. Foreigners overstaying their visas are charged any where between RMB 500 to RMB 5,000/day. According to multiple reports, foreigners without a valid visa must expect to be awarded the red “has to leave China within ten days” stamp in their passport, which will make it nearly impossible to apply for a new visa.

Other rumors out there

It seems that staying at private accommodation is no longer an option for tourists from at least some countries as either a hotel booking or a proof of kinship need to be provided. Hotels have received stricter deadlines about the ID registration of their guests by the PSB and are more and more expected to demand full payment upfront to prevent fake bookings.

Concerning L and F visa, it seems extremely difficult to get a visa for any duration longer than 30 days. If 60 or 90 days visas are issued, most of them only allow a maximum duration of stay of 30 days in China.

Extensions of L visa have been reported to be subject to the provision of Olympic tickets a copy of your debit card or a bank account statement showing certain funds (reports range between USD 100 and 150/day of stay in China). It still remains unclear if tickets acquired through the China resident ticket round can be used.

There are still reports about successful applicants of 6 month and 1 year multiple entry F visas, however, none of them could be verified or tracked down to the reasons.

While researching this post, we attempted to get clarification from both the Exit and Entry Management Section of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the current state of visa policies. The lady on duty at the Exit and Entry Management Section of the Beijing PSB informed us that all questions related to the formalities of getting a visa during the Olympic period should be referred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. When we inquired about the likelihood of being able to extend visas from within China during the Olympics, we were informed that there was no definite policy and she could not provide any firm advice. We called the number for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs supplied by the PSB and were forwarded on twice before being given the number 6596 3788. None of our repeated calls to this number were answered.
